Background of The Oprah Winfrey Show

The Oprah Winfrey Show is a self titled day-time talk show hosted by the one and only, Oprah Winfrey. It is a genre of television that blends the private and the public into a public confessional. On the show, nearly every issue and topic that exists in our world is discussed and explained. For example, Oprah covers topics from health to relationship to money management and to what’s not. Oprah somehow manages to get ordinary people and also famous personalities to reveal their inner truth on her television talk show. This program is so very successful because it is able to relate to the normal lives of majority of the people in our world today. People take comfort in knowing that they are not the only ones battling and overcoming certain obstacles in life. Moreover, the act of Oprah exposing bits and pieces of her private life such as her poor background, her struggle with weight and her encounter with sexual harassment on her own day-time talk show attracts more viewers because this helps audiences relate easier and feel closer to her.

The main target audience of The Oprah Winfrey Show is the middle-aged American women, which is reflected in topics, style and general approach. Women are attracted to the show because majority of them feel comfortable with the form of talk. Women learn and explore daily by listening to other people’s problems and by expressing their own feelings. The conversations on The Oprah Winfrey Show give the same satisfaction and might even broaden the horizon of the viewers even further, since the show contains such a varied selection of issues.

The objective of this show is to let everyone know that life is not a bed of roses and we have our fair share of obstacles to overcome throughout our lives. The show provides moral support for people all around the world besides coming up with solutions and ways to tackle a certain problem. At the same time, The Oprah Winfrey show is out to create awareness for current issues that need our immediate attention, for example global warming, the danger of using our handphones while driving, the importance of education and many other topics. Furthermore, The Oprah Winfrey Show gives back to the society as well, for instance Oprah uses her talk show to heavily publicize for charity. Likewise, Oprah helps talented but unfortunate people to achieve their dreams. The best example would be Charice, the singing sensation from Philippines who was able to accomplish her dreams of becoming a singer and meeting her idol, Celine Dion all thanks to Oprah.
