Occasionally we have the habit to text or talk on the phone when we drive, not all of us but many of us do. But this has to stop because it is absolutely DANGEROUS! On the Oprah Winfrey Show on January 15 2010, Oprah revealed that 71% of people between the ages of 18 and 49 admit to texting or talking on the phone when they are behind the wheel. Some of us might think we are capable of multi-tasking, but no matter how well we multi-task, texting and talking on the phone while driving would definitely distract us. Distracted drivers are guilty of claiming lives and destroying families throughout the world and not only in America.
On 22nd of September 2006, Jim Furfaro and Keith O' Dell were victims of a distracted driver. Reggie Shaw, a 19 year old boy who was texting while driving caused an accident that killed Jim and Keith on the spot. Reggie crossed the centre line and clipped Jim's car so Jim ended up on the oncoming traffic line and was broadsided by the vehicle behind Reggie. Reggie was then sentenced to 30 days in jail and community service. Reggie admitted that he texted nearly 100% of the time while driving because he didn't know how dangerous it was. Growing up and going to high school and going to driver's ed, it was never taught to him how dangerous it was and he didn't really think about it. Now, he is haunted by what he has done. Even after serving 30 days in prison and doing community service, Reggie doesn't feel any better about himself because no matter what he does, the 2 lives he took would never be redeemed.
Prevention is certainly better than cure! Stop using your phone while you are driving because when an accident happens, regretting would be too late. Oprah is seen doing her part for the community when she started her 'No Phone Zone' campaign. She is making American citizens sign pledges that they would either not use their phones behind the wheel or use handsfree while answering a call. Oprah is also joining forces with Harpo Studios to make April 30th America's first 'No Phone Zone Day'. This campaign is to honor victims of distracted driving as well as to educate and activate Americans to end the deadly driving habits that kill nearly 6,000 Americans a year.
